Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's advisor on strategic communications. The White House's advisor to strategic communications, Mercedes Schlapp, has to deal with many challenges. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a simple job of White House strategic communication adviser. The White House strategic communications adviser must deal numerous legal issues that could disrupt the messaging strategy of the administration along with Cabinet secretaries that are embroiled in their own scandals. But through it all Schlapp remains focused on the mission at hand, working closely with White House's policy and legislative affairs departments and policy shops as in the communications department for policy-related rollouts. Her focus so far is on topics like school safety, opioids and infrastructure and trade. Schlapp's current job doesn't involve much contact with reporters. She received a lot of press attention after she was announced as a candidate to replace Hope Hicks, the communications director. The fighting has been nasty. Schlapp allied with Tony Sayegh who was also a candidate. They began sparring in media. Schlapp stated that after she was informed that when the Washington Examiner ran a story which contained negative criticisms of Sayegh she sat down for a chat with the latter.
